Rules of the Road
Constrained by draft
International Rules only
A power-driven vessel may be "constrained by her draft" when, because of its draft in relation to available depth and width of navigable water, it is severely restricted in its ability to deviate from the course it is following.
This status exists in the International Rules and is not an equivalent Inland Rule category.
Except for vessels not under command or restricted in ability to maneuver, vessels must, if the circumstances admit, avoid impeding the safe passage of a vessel exhibiting the constrained-by-draft signals. A constrained-by-draft vessel must navigate with particular caution and full regard to its special condition.
