red triangle • starboard

green square • port

On fixed aids, the triangle or square supplements color. Direction of buoyage still controls lateral interpretation.

Fixed aids can use highly visible boards rather than floating buoy shapes.

Within the conventional U.S. lateral system:

red triangle carries starboard-side lateral significance

green square carries port-side lateral significance

Do not infer channel side from shape alone without considering the direction of buoyage.
