Use the channel that matches the purpose. Keep routine calls brief and move traffic off Channel 16.

In U.S. recreational boating, Channel 9 is available as a supplementary calling channel and is commonly used for routine radio checks.

The Coast Guard does not generally monitor Channel 9 as a distress channel.
